Minutemen; A Bad Idea

Hysteria and Fear Will Not Solve Illegal Immigration Problems

As mid-term congressional elections and state elections approach the issue of illegal immigration is being used as a hot button issue.

Once again The Minutemen are planning on patrolling sections of the U.S. and Mexican border.

This is an unwelcome and dangerous development. The Minutemen are basically an armed vigilante group, untrained in law enforcement or legal procedures. They are not the answer for the illegal immigration problems.

Many politicians, editorialists and news commentators, especially from the right, are happily whipping up hysteria and fear on this issue in order to enhance their election chances, ratings and fund raising. This is an issue that requires a calm, and incisive approach and a recognition of the realities of the issue. An estimated 10 million illegal aliens cannot be jailed or deported without economic and societal disruptions.

A Minutemen group is heading to South Texas where I live and that idea is not being well received by many local residents. There is no doubt there is a strong element of racism running through the movement and a potential exists for violence.

One of the leaders of a Minuteman group is a misfit named Chris Simcox. Simcox is a real whacko and reminds me very much of David Duke of Ku Klux Klan infamy.

Global Warming Will Cause Rising Sea Levels, More, Stronger Storms

Picture; Glaciers melting in Greenland

A recent scientific analysis maintains that rising sea levels over the next 100 years could occur because of the erosion of the planet's polar ice fields. The report says this erosion will be caused in a large part by human activities. The study suggests that by about 2100, average temperatures could be four degrees higher than today. This could cause the oceans to rise 13 to 20 feet. The last time this happened was 129,000 years ago, between the last two ice ages.Jonathan T. Overpeck of the University of Arizona, one of the leading members involved in the study, said there is a strong case that the failure to diminish emissions of carbon dioxide and other gases will lead to greenhouselike effect. Dr. Overpeck acknowledged the uncertainties about the causes. But he said that in a world in which humans, rich and poor, increasingly clustered on coasts, the risks were great enough to justify prompt action. "People driving big old S.U.V.'s to their favorite beach or coastal golf course," he said, should "start to think twice about what they might
be doing."
This was taken from an article, "Climate Data Hint at Irreversible Rise in Seas," by Andrew C. Revkin in the New York Times.

Veep Cheney's Travel Requirements

Cheney Thinks He's A Rock Star!

Vice President Dick Cheney has a lot in common with rock stars when he travels. Writing in today's New York Times Elisabeth Bumiller has disclosed the traveling requirements for Vice President Dick Cheney. Bumiller took the information from a document posted Thursday on the Smoking Gun Web site. Mr. Cheney's office has confirmed the details.
Some of the requirements listed: All televisions sets in Mr. Cheney's hotel suite should be tuned to Fox News (Surprised?), all lights should be on, and the thermostat set at 68 degrees.
Mr. Cheney should have a queen- or king-size bed, a desk with a chair, a private bathroom, a container for ice, a microwave oven and a coffee pot, with decaf brewed before arrival. The vice president should also have four cans of caffeine-free Diet Sprite and four to six bottles of water. He must have the hotel restaurant menu, with a copy faxed ahead to his advance office. If his
wife is with him, she should have two bottles of sparkling water, either Calistoga or Perrier. For his reading material, Mr. Cheney should have The New York Times, USA Today, The Wall Street Journal and the local newspaper."
Maybe a note should be added, "Don't let him near guns!"

Russ Feingold Has Created A Stir!

Senator Russ Feingold's call for censure of President Bush has brought a lot of criticism from the right wing and fear and apathy from the left.
Too bad someone can catch so much heat for attempting to do the right thing!

Bush Says Troop Withdrawl "Up To Next President."

At one of his rare press conferences recently President Bush let this little gem slip out. When asked about troop withdrawls in Iraq he said "That will be up to the next president."
Well! Let's see, he has three years left, so it doesn't appear that an end to our involvement is imminent.
Presidential spinners have been busily trying to explain "what he really mean't was..." but they have not been able to douse the fires this loose lipped line has ignited.
One thing seems abundantly clear. He has created a big mess that will be left for others to clean up. Posted by Picasa

I'm Baaaack!

Back Online!

I am back online at last! I have had an ordeal here in my new apartment so far! I had no phone for the first six days and no cable TV or internet till today, late this afternoon. The toilet backed up Saturday. It's a long story, but I am now back in the bosom of the electronic world!
I have missed surfing the net and all the blogs and blogging!
My new digs are smaller than the previous pad but much cheaper. The place is shaping up and I am feeling more comfortable.
Thanks for the kind comments and I am looking forward to catching up on my favorite blogs!
See ya,
Dicky Neely
