Michael Dukakis In A Tank; Sarah Palin On A Bike!

Click on pic for larger image

In the 1988 Presidential campaign a picture was widely distributed in the press of Democratic nominee Michael Dukakis in a tank. This picture was was soon the butt of jokes and derision in Republican circles. Some said this was a big factor in his major league drubbing in the election.

The picture of a giddy Sarah Palin riding on the back of a motorcycle seems at least as ridiculous as the Dukakis photo.

No Newt Is Good Newts!

Today Newt Gingrich announced he would run for President in 2012. What a shock!
Any time I hear his name I think of Macbeth and the witches on the heath and their incantations.

"Eye of newt, and toe of frog,
Wool of bat, and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork, and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg, and howlet's wing,--
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble."

SETI Suffers From Budget Cuts

Click on pic for larger image

The budget crisis has taken its toll on many worthy projects and now it has caused the shutdown of the Allen Telescope array near Hat Creek, California. This project was part of the SETI program, the Search For Extraterristrial Intelligence. These radio telescopes once swept the skies listening for any signs of intelligent signals.

"The nonprofit SETI Institute, the Bay Area organization that runs the Allen Telescope Array, is scrambling to keep the project alive. Proposals under consideration include helping the U.S. Air Force track space debris in return for operating funds, and a "citizen scientist" program that would enable people to link up with radio telescope receivers at a cost of about $5 per minute," writes Louis Sahgun in a May 7, 2011 artile in the Los Angeles Times.

This facility was named for Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.

Trump Dumped; Foyt In

A.J. Foyt duels Eddie Sachs during the 1961 500, Foyt's first win.

Today it was announced that four time winner A.J. Foyt will drive the pace car for this year's Centennial Indy 500. This is good news for race fans who cringed when The Donald had been slated to do the honors.

Donald Trump Not To Drive Pace Car At Indy 500! What A Relief!

Click on pic for larger image

I had posted this blog post and now have just found out the The Donald has pulled out. He wont be driving the pace car after all. He said he didn't have the time for the instruction and practice sessions required. Well, that's indeed good news. (3:50 pm cst)

Below see a letter I wrote to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Friends,
I recently found out that Donald Trump is to be the pace car driver for the Centennial Indy 500. I object most strenuously. Donald Trump is at best a polarizing figure and in my view a crass, self promoter and does not reflect well on the tradition of this great event.
I don't understand how he could be chosen. It would seem to me that the pace car should be driven by Little Al with Uncle Bobby, A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti in the back seat. Now that would be appropriate!
Please rectify this and don't insult the legions of race fans who don't want to see politics and egoisim injected into the 500, and this event particularly.
I have been a racing fan since the 50's when I heard Sid Collins broadcasting on the radio. I have followed Indy cars throughout the years, often in total dismay over the ups and downs, Please don't give us another downer with Trump in the driver's seat!
Sincerely,
Dicky Neely
