Dreams of Tricky Dick

Echoes of Past Haunt G.W.
Throughout the Bush 43 administration threads of the past have echoed, going back to Nixon and Reagan.
With scandals, incompetence and an unnecessary war, comparisons to a certain past president are inevitable.

VP May Be Target of Fitzgerald!
Vice President Dick Cheney may emerge as one of the individuals at the top of the administration to be investigated by Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald.
Over the years Cheney has authored a number of startling and misleading statements, among them his statement some time ago that the insurgency was in its "last throes," or his repeated claims that Iraq was planning to attack the United States with WMD.
Also memorable was his use of colorful language about a certain Washington Post reporter or his impossible suggestion to Senator Patrick Leahy on the Senate Floor when the two met in passing.

What Did Scooter Tell Dick? And When?

"What Did the VP Know and When Did He Know It?"
Questions abound concerning several key White House offficals, including Vice President Dick Cheney, concerning the case of outed CIA agent Valerie Plame.
Cheney aide Scooter Libby has been identified as the source of Plame's identity that New York Times reporter Judith Miller was supposedly trying to protect by going to jail.
The story keeps getting curiouser and curiouser as the trail grows wider daily.
Through it all President Bush keeps smirking like a Cheshire cat as the investigation draws closer and closer into the Oval Office itself.
This is the administration that came into office talking integrity, honesty, family values, less foreign entanglement, balanced budgets, smaller government and "compassionate conservatism."

Incredible Hypocrisy From GOP

Kay Bailey Hutchison

Kay Bailey is always ready to take a stand. Just what it is depends on who is in office at the time.
When President Clinton sent armed forces to Bosnia and took on the Serbs Kay Bailey was appalled. She was against "nation building" and crowed constantly about the lack of an "exit strategy."
When Bush attacked Iraq under false pretenses and started a war with no end in sight there has been nary a peep about "exit strategies."
When Clinton was under constant attack with fabricated charges and underwent impeachment she was adamant about trust and the rule of law.
Now the Bush White House is under ethical storm clouds she compares this to the Martha Stewart case!

Last Sunday(Oct. 23) Hutchison appeared on “Meet the Press. It was here she made the comparison to the case of Martha Stewart and her stock sale, “where they couldn’t find a crime and they indict on something that she said about something that wasn’t a crime.”
Ms. Hutchison said she hoped “that if there is going to be an indictment that
says something happened, that it is an indictment on a crime and not some
perjury technicality where they couldn’t indict on the crime and so they go to
something just to show that their two years of investigation was not a waste of
time and taxpayer dollars.”
Hutchison also said a possible perjury charge against any White House staffer is nothing more than a mere "technicality." But on Feb. 5, 1999, when considering articles of impeachment against President Clinton, Hutchison stated that it was important to prosecute for perjury because she was concerned that "grand juries across America are going to start asking questions about what is obstruction of justice, what is perjury. And I don't want there to be any lessening of the standard. Because our system of criminal justice depends on people telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth."

Still More Disasters, World Wide Response Team Needed

Disasters Happen!

This has been a tough year for natural disasters. A possible Atlantic hurricane record looms, hurricane Katrina was the most destructive in U.S. history. Now earthquakes have killed tens of thousands in the Kashmir, the rugged, disputed area in India and Pakistan.
Hurricane Stan piled into the countries of Mexico and Guatemala killing hundreds and burying entire villages in mudslides.
Recovery is still underway in the South East Asian Pacific ravaged by the tsunami late last year.
Rescue and recovery is underway in all of these events and is being conducted by more than 60 nations. It is expensive and tedious but absolutely necessary. Often these efforts are confused, ill led and accompanied by corruption and crime. Sometimes it seems as the lessons of past disasters have gone unlearned.
Perhaps it is time to establish a global disaster relief agency with expertise and supplies with the capability to quickly moblise and deploy to disaster striken areas in less time and with more efficency than is presently the case.
This organization could streamline proceedures for handling donations and relief and perhaps save money and wasted and duplicative efforts.

Minuteman Vigilantes Not Needed!

Minutemen Pose Danger On Border

The Minutemen, a group of self appointed vigilantes, have decided to take it upon themselves to prevent illegal aliens, drug runners and terrorists from crossing the border with Mexico.
The problem is, how do they know who is an illegal alien or an unwanted border crosser? They have no training in law enforcement nor will they have any kind of real intelligence concerning potential actual threats or smuggling.
They say they will be unarmed but already there has been an incident of so-called Minutemen being charged with carrying fire arms in a place where alcoholic beverages were sold.
There has also been an incident where they stopped a truck carrying what they took for illegal aliens but it turned out that everyone in the truck was a legal resident. Why did they stop the truck in the first place? They claim they are there just to observe and to notify law enforcement, not to intervene.
Clearly their prescence creates a strong possibility of causing a serious incident.
There have been claims that they have intimidated people they suspected of being illegal aliens. They have no legal authority and law enforcement agencies have said they don't want them there.
The Minutemen are one of those ideas whose time has not come!

Cisneros Investigation Drags On! 10 Years Later...

Henry Cisneros Is A Victim of A Republican Vendetta!

It has dragged on for over ten years, at a cost to the taxpayers of more than $20 million dollars and it is time to put an end to it.
Henry Cisneros has been the target of this investigation by special prosecutor David M. Barrett. This investigation grew out of the continuous Republican witchhunt during the Clinton administrations.
Cisneros, the popular former mayor of San Antonio, served as the Housing Director in the Clinton administration. Cisneros was seen as a rising star in politics, especially as it was becoming obvious that the fast growing Latino vote was becoming increasingly more important.
It was uncovered during the course of the investigation that Cisneros had kept a mistress, who was paid an amount of money for her upkeep and to keep silent about the affair. During the vetting process he had lied to the FBI about how much money he had paid.
Thus began the investigation. Six years ago he pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI and paid a $10,000 fine which derailed his promising political career and ended his marriage.
Yet the investigation continues. This is more than ridiculous, it shows that the Republicans still fear the charismatic Cisneros and want to make sure he doesn't revitalize his political ambitions.

SUV's, Badly Designed Status Symbols

SUV's, a Danger to Drivers, Riders,
Disaster For Environment

Watch the local news each night and observe the frequency in which auto accidents involve one or more SUV's. Now notice how often these vehicles roll over. It is on the TV screen just about every night.
Why is this? Because these vehicles are inherently dangerous because of their design and because people often drive them recklessly.
The SUV phenomenon is a fairly recent development,as is the term "SUV." The popularity of this class of vehicles has been fueled by extremely successful massive ad campaigns by auto makers that have tapped into the strong desire to own and possess status symbols. Another factor in this sales success story is the ability of the auto maker ads to combine elements of adventure, performance and style into a vehicle that can replace the staid, old images of the family station wagon or mini van.
Unfortunately there are many problems with this new "Walter Mitty" ride. The geometry of this class of vehicle causes them to overturn with less lateral force than an automobile or even a normal truck. This is because they have a higher center of gravity, a shorter track width and a shorter wheelbase. Combine these characteristics with high powered engines and drivers who envision themselves in the Baja 1000 and you get a lot of accidents, often involving a roll over.
SUV's also fall through the cracks of EPA emission and fuel mileage requirements because they are classified as "trucks" and not passenger vehicles. This classification also enables them to escape requirements concerning bumpers and other safety equipment.
These are inefficient, overly expensive and flawed vehicles with a built in design factor creating a dangerous environment for their drivers, occupants and others on the road. Most SUV's are rarel, if ever, driven off the pavement. And, like most other vehicles, they usually carry just one occupant, the driver.
And SUV's pose a greater danger to pedestrians as well according to a study done by Irish scientists. Ciaran Simms and Desmond O'Neil, of Dublin's Trinity College, released a study that claims pedestrians involved in an accident with an SUV or a 4X4 truck are two to four times more likely to suffer death or serious injury than in similar accidents with other vehicles.
Design once again comes into play in this scenario because the bumpers on these vehicles are higher from the ground and more likely to strike a pedestrian in a vital area.

Tom Delay's miraculous Image

Delay Indicted On Second Charge

Embattled Texas Congressman Tom Delay was indicted again on Monday of money laundering charges. Delay,R-Sugarland, called the indictments "An abomination!"
Known by his nickname, "The Hammer," Delay has long played hardball politics and has delighted in being a bully and in pushing the limits of ethics and the law. Now he is squealing like a stuck pig. Though publicly Republicans having been making supportive noises the enthusiam for his return to his previous position of power seems lacking.
