Justice Antonin Scalia told off critics who say he should have recused himself from a case involving Vice President Dick Cheney's energy task force. In his usual blunt style Scalia said they should ''get a life.''
"For Pete's sake, if you can't trust your Supreme Court justice more than that, get a life," Scalia said.
Speaking to an audience at the University of Connecticut's law school on Wednesday, said recusing himself from the 2004 case, which looked into recommendations from an energy task force led by the Vice President would have encouraged editorialists and other commentators in saying he has been too close to the vice president.
"I think the proudest thing I have done on the bench is not allowed myself to be chased off that case," Scalia said.
The Supreme Court was looking into the case brought forth because of Cheney's request to squash details of closed-door White House strategy sessions that produced the administration's energy policy.
The administration fought a lawsuit brought by watchdog and environmental groups that contended that industry executives, including former Enron chairman Ken Lay, helped shape that policy. The Supreme Court upheld the administration position on a 7-2 vote.
Scalia refused to recuse himself from the case in spite of arguments by critics who claimed he was biased toward the administration’s position on energy.
It was noted he had been on a hunting vacation with Cheney while the case was before the court. Lucky he didn’t get shot!
