Hoy Es El Cinco De Mayo
Today is El Cinco De Mayo, May fifth. On this day in 1862 Mexican forces under the command of General Zaragosa defeated a French army near the village of Puebla. This date is much celebrated here in South Texas. General Zaragoza's birthplace is the site of a memorial in Goliad just a bit north of Corpus Christi where I live. Of course Goliad is also the site of the infamous Goliad Massacre during the Texas War of Independence.
Former general and long time caudillo of Mexico, Porfirio Diaz played a prominent part in the battle Of Puebla. It was Diaz who made the famous statement "Pobre Mexico! Tan lejos del Dios, Tan cerca de Los Estados Unidos!" Translation; "Poor Mexico! So far from God, so close to the United States!"
Mexican history is fascinating and complicated and inextricably intertwined with that of the United States.
Please check out the banner on the bottom of the page. This worthwhile group is seeking counselors and other positions for their summer programs. Here is a link for more information.

The Fresh Air Fund is also in need of hosts for this summer. Host families are volunteers who open their hearts and home to a child from the city to give a fresh air experience that disadvantaged children never forget. Below is a link which explains everything.
