Mitt Pandering On Religious Question
Mitt Romney made his speech yesterday, aimed at reassuring so-called evangelical Christians that he is a ‘real’ Christian. He also said religion should not be a test for public office.
He is right about that but then he takes his pandering a bit too far when he made this statement.
"Freedom requires religion, just as religion requires freedom. Freedom opens the windows of the soul so that man can discover his most profound beliefs and commune with God. Freedom and religion endure together, or perish alone," he said.
What does that mean? If you have no religion or if you are an agnostic or atheist then you are not entitled to freedom in our society?
Romney also said there was a place for religion in public office. This flies in the face of centuries of governmental practice and attempts to breach Jefferson’s “wall” between state and religion.
This is wrong. Religious orthodoxy has no place in the government and if you need examples of why this is so just look at the theocracies we are dealing with in the Middle East. It really works there doesn’t it?
Mitt Romney comes across with the authenticity of a con man. He deserves the appellation “slick” far more than former President Clinton.
